Montane Winter Spine Challenger North

Jovica Spajic and Oliver Richards have finished joint 2nd in the men’s race at the Montane Winter Spine Challenger North!

The duo had been running together for much of the race and it was no surprise when they appeared together on the green in Kirk Yetholm. They paired up after around 15 miles and stuck together through the freezing conditions in the early stages, and the quagmire-like conditions they’ve endured since. Initially they were part of a group of 4, sticking together to help break the trail in the snow that covered the course but their 2 running mets fell away.

Jovica has touched the wall before having won the Montane Summer Spine Challenger North in 2023 and 2024, but his previous attempt to complete the race in Winter ended in disappointment, making this an even sweeter moment for him.
When finishing the summer race last time around, Jovica made a point of taking time at the wall to thanks all the volunteers and safety team members across the race for all their help and support and he made certain to express his massive gratitude this time around too.
Jovica’s medal was presented by the Bishop of Newcastle, a fan of the race who had come to visit the finish line this morning.

Prior to the race, Oliver told us he was particularly looking forward to getting to Greg’s Hut to sample John Bamber’s legendary Chilliwack Noodles and he was not disappointed. He praised John and the team in the hut for their kindness in warming and refuelling the pair. Oliver finished the Winter Challenger South last year and has now covered the entire route over 2 races.
